This kind of sucks:

"Should I bring a PC or Macintosh computer?

Barnard is a "PC campus". Nearly all of the computers in the computer labs are Dell PCs, as well as all faculty and staff computers. We do not mandate that all students purchase PCs, but your personal computer applications will be more compatible with the applications in the labs if you bring a PC. This is particularly important if you are relying on the labs for printouts. In addition, our staff is trained more in-depth on the PC platform and is therefore better able to assist PC users."

I'm not really sure how much stock to put in that, though. I mean, what things would I be trying to print from besides Office programs anyway? I've never had trouble sending files back and forth with my friends who have Macs, besides the fact that I can't open Photoshop files. I'm betting that a lot of students bring Macs anyway.

But I have a question regarding my decision of what kind of computer to get. Does anyone use Windows Vista? I'm wondering if the rumors that it sucks (and by that I mean more than other Windows platforms) are true or not.

My family's desktop computer has Vista, and the only time I need to use it is to print out things at home. Even then, it's horrific. It's ugly, complicated, and annoying. I really, really miss Windows XP.

I have a MacBook Pro. It's sexy. It has Word and Powerpoint and Excel, and I've never had problems transferring files in those programs to the Dell PCs at school. Some of the fonts don't work, but that's not really a big issue. I can't think of any other programs you'd really need to use on both a personal and lab computer.

I'd still get a Mac.

Wow, ok. Thanks for the advice :D I think I'll look into whether new laptops are still available with Windows XP, but a lot of people have been telling me to get a Mac. And there's always the possibility that Microsoft would eventually stop servicing XP with updates and whatnot.
ssempaissempai on May 22nd, 2008 12:55 am (UTC)
Yup, they're actually phasing out XP. Totally blows >
Syomimashou on May 22nd, 2008 01:00 am (UTC)
Well, my dad said that his IT guy at work told him that they might actually come out with a new Windows fairly soon because of how awful Vista is, kind of like they did when Windows ME sucked so bad in 2000 or whatever. And then XP would only be available until that new one came out.

No excuses. Chances are, things won't work out. Get a Mac.
Syomimashou on May 22nd, 2008 03:11 am (UTC)
That comment was actually part of the reasons why I might not want to get a PC, because it would be annoying if 18 months from now Microsoft stopped supporting my operating system.

Oh, I thought you meant like, well I could get a new thing and then it would be fine.
ssempaissempai on May 22nd, 2008 12:21 pm (UTC)
sure you are XD [a fanatic] I'm afraid to admit my love of my pc around you XD
Syomimashou on May 22nd, 2008 01:39 pm (UTC)
Ok now I don't want the two of you to get into an argument about this on my lj! XD;;;
ミランダ (大丈夫)faded_lace on May 22nd, 2008 02:08 pm (UTC)
XP Whateverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
ssempaissempai on May 22nd, 2008 12:53 am (UTC)
Windows isn't that bad; Mac fans are just fanatics. However, ya, Vista isn't that hot... so... I'm thinking I might just skip the drama and buy a mac.

Windows XP <3
Syomimashou on May 22nd, 2008 01:01 am (UTC)
Yeah, I pretty much agree with your whole comment. XD

Yeah, I'm getting a Mac to bring to college, luckily Bryn Mawr has both Mac and Windows computers on campus.

I think Macs are pretty compatible in most ways with PCs then they were awhile ago. My mom is still against them because they were never compatible with anything, but my Windows XP laptop has always worked pretty well with the Mac at my dad's. :)
Syomimashou on May 22nd, 2008 02:39 am (UTC)
Yeah, that's the picture I seem to be getting from people--there are really just a few instances when Macs and PCs aren't compatible.

Not to mention that the majority of people I've talked to are bringing Macs to college. I'd be surprised if there weren't a lot at Barnard as well.
ミランダ (大丈夫)faded_lace on May 22nd, 2008 03:05 am (UTC)
In most cases where things won't work, it's Mac to PC. Macs will read almost any file (so long as you have the program on the Mac) written on a PC, but sometimes, PCs won't read files of Macintosh origin. However, when it comes to Microsoft Office, there's almost never a problem. It's more in Photoshop and those sorts of programs.

I asked at every college I applied to if they were Mac friendly XD

As someone who used a PC first, then a Mac, I wouldn't say I'm a fanatic, kthanx. Macs are just better.

Get a Mac. I promise, you won't be let down. And if you get it soon, I'll give you a free tutorial. ♥
Syomimashou on May 22nd, 2008 03:07 am (UTC)
The reason I'm looking into all this now is because my dad said he'll buy me my laptop as a graduation present, so I should be getting it soon~ So if I get a Mac, I'll definitely take you up on the tutorial. ♥ I know you say Macs are easier to use than PCs, but I still feel like I'll need it, especially for getting it set up and everything.
Fye D. Fluoritehalf_misfortune on May 22nd, 2008 03:13 am (UTC)
Well, new things always take getting used to, even if they are better. You really should get a Mac, especially you. Since computers seem to hate you XD;;; Basically, the consensus of this thread is get a Mac. XD

Syomimashou on May 22nd, 2008 03:22 am (UTC)
Computers do seem to hate me. XD;; Except Hilde's computer, which seems to hate her and love me. But that's because I'm nicer and more patient with it.

But yeah...everyone so far has pretty much said to get a Mac. I'm glad I'm getting advice from lots of people in this post because that will make me feel better about my decision in the end. ^_^;
Fye D. Fluoritehalf_misfortune on May 22nd, 2008 03:27 am (UTC)
XD;; Hilde must be like Elaine with computers

Indeed. Go for the Mac. It comes with my love & time. XD;;;
